Description: Clark Enterprises is the holding company for Clark Construction Group LLC, one of the nation's largest providers of construction services. The company has projects from coast to coast, with offices in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Oakland, Seattle, Tampa and Costa Mesa, Calif. Subsidiaries include Shirley Contracting, which does highways and heavy construction; Clark Residential, which builds high-end multi-family complexes; and Atkinson Construction, a heavy construction company.

Developments: The company prides itself on handling a wide array of projects, from interior renovations of small buildings to constructing sports stadiums. Its most recent big accomplishments in the Washington area include the January opening of the $100 million Music Center at Strathmore, the $92 million extension of the Blue Line Metro to Largo and completion of the $200 million National Museum of the American Indian, which opened last August. The company began work last year on a sprawling new headquarters for the Transportation Department in Southeast, and on two contracts at Washington Dulles International Airport to build automated people movers and tunnels. Other ongoing projects in the area include: a new office building at 1601 K St. NW, an expansion of the Shakespeare Theatre in a new headquarters facility for the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, and an office building and Westin Hotel at Arlington Gateway. Clark Residential is building several condominium and apartment buildings for the JBG Cos. and CarrAmerica across the metropolitan region. The company has submitted one of two competing proposals to widen high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Interstate 95 to three "high-occupancy toll" lanes and to link them to the Capital Beltway. Outside the Washington area, Clark completed the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and Petco Park, the new ballpark for the San Diego Padres. It is working on a massive new medical center in Los Angeles and a major expansion at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. It expects to begin work this year soon on an $80 million contract to renovate Pasadena's City Hall. Chairman and chief executive A. James Clark in February pledged $30 million to the University of Maryland, his alma mater, for scholarships for engineering students.
