Description: Harman manufacturers high-end audio, video and electronic systems for business and consumers. Consumer products are sold under brand names such as JBL, Infinity and Becker. Professional brands include Soundcraft, Crown and DigiTech.
Developments: In the mid-1990s, Harman leapt into the fledgling business of vehicle "infotainment systems," sleek dashboard gadgets, loaded with buttons and video screens, that integrate radio, navigation, telephone, and climate control functions. Most analysts say it turned out to be a wise investment. Today, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Land Rover and BMW use Harman's technology in their cars and the company has what it calls a "leadership position" in the fast-growing industry. In 2004, Chrysler said it would adopt the Harman system by 2007. Harman also launched a new high-end infotainment system in the new Audi A6. In its last fiscal year ended June 30, 2004, Harman's revenue rose 22 percent to $2.71 billion, driven primarily by higher sales of audio and infotainment systems. But analysts caution that as the industry becomes more competitive, Harman stands to lose business to lower-priced competitors. So far, infotainment systems are confined to luxury cars, but the technology is trickling down into the mainstream. Harman founder Sidney Harman says a bigger market for infotainment systems can only help the company. "Harman is far and away the best equipped to prosper in a larger and more competitive market," he said.
