Description: Inova Health System is one of the largest nonprofit health care systems in the Washington area. It owns hospitals—Inova Fairfax, Inova Alexandria, Inova Fair Oaks, Inova Fairfax for Children and Inova Mount Vernon—and nursing homes, assisted-living homes and emergency- and urgent-care centers. The hospitals have 1,564 beds. Inova is affiliated with Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge.

Developments: In October, Inova Health System announced plans to merge with the nonprofit Loudoun Healthcare Inc. Inova pledged $200 million to upgrade Loudoun Healthcare's hospital services, build four smaller health centers across Loudoun County and construct an urgent-care center south of Dulles Airport. The merger has since been finalized. The Inova Heart and Vascular Institute opened in October at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The hospital system also announced a $350,000 renovation of the eight-bed pediatric unit at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and a three-year, $9 million plan to upgrade radiology equipment at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.
