Description: USA Mobility operates a paging network for one-way and two-way paging services. It also resells other wireless services, such as wireless e-mail, through carriers including Nextel Communications Inc. and Cingular Wireless LLC.

Developments: Last year, Metrocall Inc. and Arch Wireless, the two largest paging companies in the country, merged to form USA Mobility, a holding company that owns both companies. Metrocall and Arch had expanded in the early 1990s, building out one-way and two-way paging networks, but that industry has been eroding, as pagers lose ground to cellular phones. From 1999 to 2003, the paging industry shrank from more than 40 million subscribers to 12 million. Metrocall purchased a two-way paging company, Weblink Wireless, in 2003, but subscribers for that service have also been in decline. The combined revenue of Metrocall and Arch fell from $1.3 billion in 1999 to $934 million in 2003, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Faced with these difficulties, both companies went through a bankruptcy process to reduce debt. USA Mobility has been trying to minimize costs and maintain the paging business. It is led by long-time Metrocall executive Vincent D. Kelly, who has said the key to the company's survival is cutting costs in the old paging business while investing in the new businesses. USA Mobility still operates the paging network, which has about 6.6 million subscribers, mostly health care, business and government customers, where pagers are still used. The company has also branched out into other areas of business, including reselling wireless services provided by other carriers. It also manages wireless communications for other businesses, assessing how many and what type of devices a business might need. This year, the company is still focused on integrating its operations, a company spokesman said. But the company faces an uphill battle, with stiff competition for portable communications services from well-financed companies with better-known brands like Verizon Wireless.
