Description: Primus is an international telecommunications company that provides voice, data, Internet phone-calling and broadband and dial-up Internet services mainly in the United States, Australia, Canada and Western Europe. More than 75 percent of its revenues are derived outside the United States. The company says it has more than 50,000 customers for Lingo, its retail Internet phone service launched in June 2004.

Developments: After reporting its first profitable year in 2003, Primus went back into the red last year. In an attempt to keep its long distance voice and dial-up Internet customers from defecting to competitors, early last year the company announced a major strategy change. It hopes to increase revenue and retain customers through bundled products such as Lingo, by building out its own broadband network in Australia, and by selling local and wireless services provided through other carriers. Primus officials say the early results of the new initiatives are encouraging, with more than 20,000 local lines in Canada, more than 50,000 phone-calling customers and more than 60,000 broadband customers in Australia.
