Description: Tier Technologies handles financial-transaction-processing services and does technical consulting work for government sector clients. The Internal Revenue Service is a major client; Tier handles the agency's processing of taxes paid online.

Developments: Last year was a big one for Tier. In June, the company centralized its offices in Reston, moving its headquarters from Walnut Creek, Calif., and shutting down a Boston office. The move came after a year in which the company killed off unprofitable parts of its business portfolio, such as its health care and insurance operations. Major deals for Tier included a $5.8 million contract from the Tennessee Human Services Department to operate its child-support customer service unit in July. Tier also won a $2.9 million contract from the Georgia Department of Labor for voice-enabled unemployment claims processing in July. In September, the company won its biggest contract since its founding in 1991 — for the company to handle child-support payment processing services for the state of Michigan. Tier estimates the deal as worth $85 million over the next five years. Tier handles $3.8 billion in child-support payments per year with operations in nine states.
