Description: United Therapeutics develops and makes medicines for cardiovascular conditions, cancer and infectious diseases.

Developments: Executives at United Therapeutics are hoping this year will be as good as 2004. Last year the company celebrated a milestone few other local biotechs have reached: profitability. United Therapeutics recorded a $15.4 million profit on $73.6 million in revenue, primarily on sales of Remodulin, a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare but potentially fatal obstruction of the blood vessels to the lungs. The company is no longer providing updates on how many people are using Remodulin, which costs about $10,000 per month, but executives say the market is growing. Investors seem to agree: United Therapeutics shares were among the region's best performers last year. They started the year at $23.50 and closed at $45.15. Late last year, the firm also won regulatory approval for intravenous delivery of Remodulin, an important step because many patients have found that the primary under-the-skin delivery method causes painful skin irritations. Also, the new version allows the firm to better compete with a product from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC. In February of this year, United Therapeutics said it had been granted a five-year patent extension in the United States for Remodulin. The patent will expire in 2014, rather than 2009.
