Description: Virginia Commerce Bancorp is the holding company for Virginia Commerce Bank, a full-service community bank. Opened in 1988, it has 16 branches, two mortgage loan offices, an investment services department and more than $1 billion in assets.

Developments: Virginia Commerce continued to grow and expand its reach in Northern Virginia, as it competes with the large national and regional banks that have been gobbling up local competitors and each other. Virginia Commerce's assets increased more than 29 percent in 2004, passing the $1 billion mark, a milestone in the banking industry. Loans rose by more than 42 percent. The bank has been able to fund its growth from its profit as well as from a "follow-on" public stock offering that raised $22 million and was heavily oversubscribed. Virginia Commerce opened its 15th branch (in Chantilly) in November and its 16th (in the Del Ray section of Alexandria) in January. The company plans to open an additional three branches this year.
