House Judiciary Committee

1. The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill making it a federal crime to place or receive bets over the Internet, a measure aimed mainly at casino-style sites and sports betting operations. A "yes" vote was to advance the bill.
Vote: Passed, 21-9, on April 6, 2000

2. The House Judiciary Committee defeated a bid for a two-year rather than five-year extension of the ban on new Internet taxes. The panel then reported a five-year extension to the full House. A "yes" vote favored a two-year extension.
Vote: Rejected, 15-22, on May 4, 2000

3. The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill removing the caps on H-1B visas for skilled workers, now set at 115,000 in fiscal 2000 and 107,500 in 2001. Workers admitted above those levels would have to be paid at least $40,000 annually. A "yes" vote was to report the bill to the House.
Vote: Passed, 18-11, on May 17, 2000
