Sometimes you have to name-drop shamelessly to make a point, so I apologize, but here it is: The first time I met Henry Louis "Skip" Gates Jr. was years ago in Stockholm, when we both boarded a shuttle bus to take us from our hotel to the palace where Toni Morrison was receiving her Nobel prize. I was there to cover the event; he was an invited guest, because that's the way he rolls. Picture that glittering event, then look at the pictures of Gates handcuffed on his own porch, being hauled to jail.
Agree or not, this is my take: Folks, no matter how much you'd like to think that racism is dead, the Gates affair demonstrates that we don't make this stuff up.
