I raved in my
Nov. 6 online column
, about a new book that lays bare the confusion of college freshmen, particularly the half of them attending community colleges. "The College Fear Factor" by Seton Hall University scholar Rebecca D. Cox is the best account I have ever seen of how little high schools teach students about handling college level research, and how clueless are first year professors to the best ways of getting students over that hump. I suspect this problem also affects most students arriving at state-supported four year colleges. Cox used interviews of 120 students and watched lecture hall dynamics for five years. Cox suggested the colleges do more to hire instructors based on teaching skills. I suggested high schools get serious about making all college-bound students do major research projects.
Are there other ways to solve this?
