Let us suppose you could create your perfect study-library. Money is no object. What kind of room would you have? What objects would you furnish it with? What particular books would you be sure to have on the shelves?
Inspiration may be found, for those who need it, in a picture book called "At Home with Books" or in a wonderful tome called "The Englishman's Room." To me, Henry Higgins's study-laboratory in "My Fair Lady" always seemed near perfect, even to the second floor bookshelves reachable by ladder or stair. I've also always liked the look of the Duke of Devonshire's library at his modest little bungalow, Chatsworth. (That's irony, folks -- Chatsworth and its estates are among the glories of old England.)
