How much of a book do we retain?
»

Since last week's thread was about rereading, I've been thinking about what we retain from a book after we turn its last page. A year later, what is remembered? A bit of plot, a general sense of its character (witty, tragic, playful, etc), maybe the way we felt while we read the book, perhaps a faint memory of its style or tone. Still, all in all, nothing much really. Where has the book gone to? Does any book only exist when we're actually reading its words?
Has something from the page gone into our blood and brains, affected our outlook on the world, even if we don't quite remember what?
