The enthusiasm in Republican circles for putting Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal on the ticket this fall is a sign of how far conservative political fortunes have fallen. Jindal is bright and promising, but he was elected to his first statewide office approximately two minutes ago. Perhaps conservatives should see if he can turn his state around before anointing him the next Ronald Reagan?

What's the campaign slogan for McCain-Jindal? "On average we're not that old"? This ticket is a bad idea.

I don't think republicans need to worry about this because it's not going to happen. Gov. Crist or George Allen yeah but not this young fellow. Give Jindal a few years to get wet behind the ears before you thrust into world leadership.

It's an awful idea. It's the equivalent of nominating John Edwards in 2004 - he was utterly incongruent with the catastrophic threats of the modern age. McCain needs a wise, experienced VP to help assuage fears that he is too old. Jindal has no foreign policy experience, minimal executive experience, and minimal life experience. His time will come, but he would be an anchor on the ticket.

Sure, why not. Caligula's horse for the Senate, too. Bart Simpson for Secretary of Keeping It Real. What difference does it make? The neocons treat all of this as a game, without any interest in actual performance, so if Jindal looks okay on TV and can get off some zingers on Letterman, let's put him a heartbeat away from the highest office in the land.

The GOP realizes that right now they have the same amount of black Representatives and Senators as the Botha government did during Apartheid. The desperation to trot out a token minority is obvious.

McCain would likely do whatever Cheney and the gang told him to, though. Why would he change now this close to the fall?

Yes, but he has had executive experience since 1996. According to Wikipedia Louisiana Governor "Foster appointed Jindal to be secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, an agency which then represented about 40 percent of the state budget. During his tenure as secretary, Louisiana's Medicaid program went from bankruptcy with a $400 million deficit into three years of surpluses totaling $220 million. Jindal was criticized during the 2007 campaign by the Louisiana AFL-CIO for having closed some local clinics to balance the budget."

States Medicaid programs are one of the most if not the most expensive programs that states have to administer. Most people do not know that Medicaid dollars seldom go to the poor people served. The Medicaid dollars go to "providers" sometimes big corporate operations which adminster their health care to "recipients" many times removed. I am almost 100% sure that the closing of the local clinics mentioned above was not done arbitrarily but because either the labs were providing very substandard service or they were ripping-off Medicaid. If most people would understand how Medicaid works they would not always be so quick to criticize cuts in its growth and other reform measures.
If nothing else, people should know and understand that Medicaid money does not go directly to poor patients but to "providers" like nursing homes which unfortunately do not always have the best interest of their patients in mind. Like any other businesses, these providers' first priority is making a profit.

PS If you like Medicaid you will love the health care provided by a nationalized health care program supported by Obama or Clinton.

Be careful what you wish for.

Commenting on Bobby Jindal's VP potential I did not realize or think that there might be a racial "angle" to it.
But now reading some of the other posts here it seems that to some it is all about race.
I guess that explains the chithole that the Demos are in right now with their first "African-American" Presidential candidate and their first "Female" Presidential candidate.
To them it's all about race and "gender" I suppose.

I think its a great idea! Given the polling across America, the republicans chances of lossing are still egual to Bush running again and that would be a big, "not happening." The republicans are the party of "No credibility."

I think that Larry Craig would be a brilliant running mate for McCain - he would certainly capture the closeted voter. Wait, I can see the campaign slogan now:

From a purely political point of view it would be an unwise choice. The Republicans are going to spend the next few months telling us how inexperienced Sen. Obama is and how that inexperience disqualifies him for the presidency so to choose someone even younger and less experienced to be the second to a 72 year old and just a heart beat away from the presidency would nullify the inexperience argument.

Tuesday's results have showed us how much of a factor race is going to be in this race. Since we can expect black to be voting in droves for Obama, McCain should try to find a conservative Hispanic women to be his running mate. As an added bonus, she would probably help draw in the Catholic vote. Who knows, with that approach McCain might even be able to carry California and Florida.

40 million of us don't have health care so we're wishing for a candidate with a plan. A plan like the one our congressional members have, the plans we pay for with our tax dollars.

Ponnuru, you know how much I respect your opinion. And you certainly are "in the know". And I really dig tandori chicken, the real stuff like they serve around Bell Labs in Homdel, NJ, if they have not outsourced that entire place to India as yet. So inquirying minds want to know Ponnuru.

Some people are having intuitions that the Republican Party is sabotaging itself right now in order for Democrats to end at least one limited conflict, raise taxes and return the United States currency and economy to solvency in the next four years. Sorta sounds like a Reagan plan to me, do you know what I mean son ? So Democrats take the hit for raising taxes, suffering through a recession or depression on a massive scale and then as a balance budget comes to fruiation by 2012, Republicans can claim credit for "Happy Days are Here Again" without chemical intervention ?

If this entire scenario were true some things would have to be discounted. First would be a lack of security on 09/11. Bush's watch. Next would be an incursion and invasion based on false evidence lasting up to a point whereby Democrats start actually start listening to Russians and the rest of the world.

Now, I guess I could end there but I will include a failure to reform social security, a failure to reform the tax code, tax breaks to fellow aristocrats that really ticked off alot of the true conservative base not really making over a million a year. Failure to protect borders or reform Immigration in a civil manner. And then we could go onto devaluation of the dollar, very very high energy costs equating to high cost of living and recession, Then we can finish off all of it by continuing to play politics maintaining a status quo of Lameduckness in an election year. Am sure there will be more to revealed in public domain as it is an election year and "Oh well, that's just politics".

Thing that really bothers me is this implanted rumour or intuition that makes some people think Republicans are in the implosion or self destruct mode really opting out of this year's presidential election. Truth of the matter is that the Republican party has been in a self-destruct mode heading for a bottom for sometime now.

Someone told me to: "Stick with the Winners". Let's do lunch soon, what are those green peas with tiny onions in white sauce called again, I forget ?
