Replying to:
Considering that he is a protege of Strom Thurmond, who was a great supporter of segregation (and a vile human being), it's a safe bet to say that he may be just an eensy weensy bit racist, himself. It's safe to extrapolate that from the company he chose to keep, don't you think?
As for Mr. Wilson's "dissent" and you so kindly put it, it was not dissent, but disrespect. Not once, when Bush addressed Congress, did Democrats pull such a stunt. There were plenty of choice words at other times, but not when W was speaking.
Furthermore, do you have some aversion to the concept of professionalism, Mr. Ponneru? It boils down to that: Joe Wilson was unprofessional, ungentlemanly, uncivil, and showed no respect of his boss. Disrespecting the boss in my workplace isn't likely to help me win his favor, and frankly, that man has been in politics too long to not know to control his emotions, and act like an adult when at work.
But now I'm going to put that aside. His lack of professionalism doesn't offend me as much, as his blatant stupidity (and yours, for the record). Does this man take pride in making it glaringly obvious that he didn't bother to read this bill? If you'll remember, I posted the quote, VERBATIM, that states that illegal immigrants will not be eligible to receive government health care benefits. So, the fact that he was both, emotional AND uninformed just makes him look pathetic. Do you really want such a lazy, uninformed, and ill-prepared character in power of our future? Right on, jromaniello!
And did you know (I've posted it in a previous comment in this group) that Joe Wilson voted FOR using taxpayer dollars to reimburse hospitals for healthcare provided to illegal immigrants as part of the Medicare modernization bill of 2003?
That's right. He voted in FAVOR of using taxpayer dollars to pay for illegal immigrants.
First he was fer it, now he's agin' it.
(But that was under a different president...a white southern conservative Republican president.)
Wilson is also noted for disparaging Strom Thurmond's black daughter, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, when she revealed that ol' Strom was her father. Wilson accused her of "smearing" Thurmond's "image" and of trying to "diminish" one of his "heroes". No, Joe Wilson doesn't seem like someone who suffers black people lightly. No pun intended.
But he don't like white people who tell the truth when he don't like it, neither. Like in 2002, when he ranted at Dem Rep. Bob Filner of California:
"In September of 2002, The Washington Post reported that Wilson flipped out during a debate on C-SPAN with Dem Rep. Bob Filner of California, shouting at him and ranting about his “hatred of America.” From Nexis:
Filner, who opposes unilateral U.S. military action, suggested that in the 1980s, when U.S. officials sided with Iraq in its war against Iran, Saddam Hussein obtained biological and chemical weapons technology from the United States. “We gave it to him,” Filner asserted.
“That is wrong. That’s made up,” Wilson fired back. “I can’t believe you would say something like that.”
When Filner calmly held his ground, advising Wilson to read newspaper reports and other documentation, the Republican erupted: “This hatred of America by some people is just outrageous. And you need to get over that.”
As moderator Connie Brod sat by helplessly, Filner challenged: “Hatred of America? … Are you accusing me?”
“Yes!” Wilson shouted. For good measure, over the next minute Wilson accused Filner of harboring “hatred of America” four more times, of being “hateful” three times and of being “viscerally anti-American” once."
Joe Wilson is a man with a problem. But it's just the kind of problem that makes him a Big Man On Campus with the Republicans. And apparently with Ramesh Ponnuru too.
