The scariest movie ever made

It's the day before Halloween, a time when movie lovers ponder an extremely important question: what's the scariest film of all time?

Over at The Guardian today, Stuart Heritage -- his tongue firmly in his cheek -- suggests that it comes down to "The Shining" or "Paranormal Activity." After evaluating the two on various important critera (best title, best Internet parodies), he determines that "The Shining" is, in fact, the most terrifying story ever committed to celluloid.

But what film do you think is truly the scariest? Will you go with "The Shining," "Psycho" or -- the most often-cited winner -- "The Exorcist"?

the scariest movies are the ones where they try to eat you...
nothing scarier than being awake while someone or something has bitten down on your leg or arm and is eating you...

the scariest movie that I've seen in a long while is Antichrist. And before that, the last time I can really remember being scared big time in a movie was during the japanese version of The Eye and when I saw Event Horizon in the movie theater (I was a youngun).

The scariest movie ever made was the musical "Chicago" where Richard Gere did his own singing and dancing.

In my younger days, I thought The Exorcist was indeed the scariest movie I had ever seen.

Now I have to go with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.......Nurse Ratched is one scary monster.

Silence of the Lambs is also one very scary movie......

Without a doubt it's "Attack of the Mushroom People." Scared the bejeezus out of me as a little kid.

"The Exorcist" is not game! Movie scared the crap outta me when it came out.

The first "Omen" was pretty scary as well.

The first installment of "The Saw", was pretty out there as well.

"The Shining" never really did it for me...too slow moving.

Can I give a special mention to "The Godfather, Part II"? Once Michael finds out that Fredo is the one who almost got his family killed, the movie really turns into something scary.

I'm from a different generation where "less is more". Today's movies can be too graphic, leaving nothing to the imagination. I found the initial offering of "Aliens" to be the scariest. Just the right balance of one's own imagination driving the fright effect and some visuals of the monsters once the stage was set.

By far the scariest movie I ever saw was The Night of the Demon, a British horror flick made in 1957. Of course, it was also the first scary movie I ever saw- I was 10 at the time. Since then, I would list The Exorcist, Alien, and [REC], a recent Spanish movie. I defy anyone to watch the last twenty minutes of that one alone.

My votes -- The Birds, which scared the heck out of me when I was young, although the short story was even scarier and creepier, if that's possible; Val Lewton's Curse of the Cat People; and my top of list, the first Alien. Also, anything with Paris Hilton.

While The Shining and The Exorcist can't be beat, The Orphanage (a pretty recent Mexican film) and The Ring rank up there as well!

The Ammityville Horror, Part II. Mainly because there is the reallife legend of that house in NY and stories that people who have lived there have told. It kind of sticks in the back of your mind..did that really happen? Part I was scary, but part II is the story of the family that were really murdered there. Was he paranoid schizo, or was he demonically possessed?
