| Love them or hate them, standardized tests are a fact of life for public schools in the Washington area. Virginia uses the Standards of Learning test as a benchmark for student progress. The state also uses a school's performance on the test to determine whether the school is accredited. Mark Twain Middle School in Alexandria, a Fairfax County Public School, gradually improved its performance on the tests, progressing from provisionally accredited in 1997-1998, meeting the 70 percent passing target in only one subject area, to fully accredited for the 2002-2003 school year, hitting better than 70 percent across the board. Each year in between, the school's passing rates improved. | |||||
