School Readiness Primer

Kindergarten can be daunting for children as well as parents. As spring registration deadlines approach, many parents are trying to find ways to ensure their child will have a positive learning experience in an appropriate educational setting.

The Washington Post and washingtonpost.com queried public school districts in Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District, along with a few area private schools, to help create this school readiness guide. In this package, you will find lots of useful information about school requirements and recommendations such as age and immunization stipulations, application deadlines and at-home preparation for families with children about to enter kindergarten. The guide also includes contact numbers for early education specialists who can help identify potential learning disabilities.

The kindergarten readiness guide reflects the philosophies and teaching styles of each participating school and school district as submitted by their officials. They have been edited, and some have been supplemented by washingtonpost.com research.
