Peter Clavelle was born in Winooski, Vt., a small city at the northeastern edge of Burlington. He attended Catholic schools in Vermont, earned a bachelor's degree in urban studies from St. Anselm's College in Manchester, N.H., and a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University.

Clavelle has spent most of his career working in municipal government. He was town manager in Castleton, Vt., and later returned to his hometown of Winooski as city manager. Before he joined the Burlington city administration of then-Mayor Bernard Sanders, he worked for the state Department of Sheriffs and State's Attorneys.

Clavelle worked first as personnel director in Burlington and then headed the newly created Community and Economic Development Office. After Sanders retired to run for the U.S. House, Clavelle ran for mayor himself. He served two terms and then lost re-election in 1993. He founded a consulting businesses and won election as mayor again in 1995.

He has been re-elected four times since then.

Past Campaigns:

Peter Clavelle's first run for public office was in 1989 when he won election as mayor of Burlington as a Progressive. He won re-election two years later but was defeated in a bid for a third term in 1993 by a Republican city councilman.

Clavelle spent the intervening two years setting up a consulting firm that specialized in community development. He ran for his old job again in 1995 and defeated the Republican who had beaten him two years earlier.

Clavelle has been re-elected four times since then and is the city's longest-serving mayor. He switched political affiliations to the Democratic Party for his last re-election campaign and is running for governor as a Democrat.
