Biography:

Joe Manchin was born and raised in Farmington, Marion County. The 1965 graduate of Farmington High School won a football scholarship to attend West Virginia University, but an injury ended his athletic ambitions.

Manchin received an undergraduate degree in business and economics from WVU in 1970. He operated a chain of family owned retail stores and currently has a stake in Enersystems, which has brokered coal and has conducted other business involving natural resources.

Joe Manchin was elected to House of Delegates in 1982 and 1984, to the state Senate in 1986, 1988 and 1992 and as Secretary of state in 2000. He ran for governor in 1996, but lost in the Democratic primary.

Manchin handed off day-to-day operations of Enersystems to his son, Joe IV, when he took office as secretary of state.

Manchin is married and has three children and six grandchildren.
