Biography:
Joe Satrom was raised on a family farm in Broadlawn Township, N.D. He graduated from the consolidated Clifford-Galesburg High School in 1963, where he was co-salutatorian with his cousin.
During his senior year in high school, he joined the North Dakota National Guard and served with the 231st Combat Engineering Company in Hillsboro, N.D. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1971.
He graduated with a degree in agricultural education from North Dakota State University in 1968, where he served as editor of the college newspaper.
He served as the state's tourism director until 1976, when he became adminsitrator of a large business contracting firm. In 1978, he and his wife, Katherine, founded Satrom Travel & Tour, a travel agency.
In 1982, he was elected to the state Senate, where he served until 1991.
In 1991, he became state director of The Nature Conservancy, where he worked for eight years before taking a post as director of the land protection program for Ducks Unlimited in Bismarck, N.D.
He and his wife have two children.

Joe Satrom lost his first race for the Legislature, a 1980 bid for the North Dakota House. He was elected to the Senate in 1984, and re-elected in 1988.
