Robert Aderholt came within one percent of winning a seat in the Alabama House when he was 24 and eventually won the state house seat at 31.
He garnered only 46 percent of the vote in the June 1996 Republican primary for U.S. House but avoided a runoff when the second-leading vote getter, former state Rep. Kerry Rich, dropped out of the race. In the general election, Aderholt defeated Democrat Robert Wilson with 50 percent of the vote to Wilson's 48 percent. He was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat Don Bevill with 56 percent of the vote.
In 2000, many predicted Aderholt would be in for the political fight of his life when he faced Democrat Marsha Folsom, wife of former Alabama Gov. Jim Folsom. But, Aderholt won easily, with 61 percent of the vote.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 87 percent of the vote, defeating Libertarian Tony McLendon.
Aderholt is heavily favored against Democrat Carl Cole in November.
