Todd Akin was elected to the Missouri House in 1988 and served there until 2000, when he ran for the U.S. House. Akin won a five-way Republican primary by 56 votes out of 57,621 cast. He defeated Democratic state Sen. Ted House with 55 percent of the vote to win the general election.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 67 percent of the vote.
