Biography:

Roy Ashburn was born in Long Beach, Calif., but grew up in the San Luis Obispo County town of Arroyo Grande. He was eight years old when he decided he wanted to be a congressman. He says he's never been able to figure out why he was struck with that desire at such a young age.

"My passion has always been government and politics, and it started when I was eight," he says. He earned a degree in public administration from California State University, Bakersfield. Afterward, he worked for Rep. Bill Thomas as a district representative.

In 1984, at the age of 29, he become the youngest person ever elected to the Kern County Board of Supervisors _ although someone took that title from him in 2003.

He later served as an assemblyman for six years, then was elected to the state senate in 2002.

Past Campaigns:

Roy Ashburn was unopposed in his 2002 bid for the state Senate, and won the nomination to run for Congress in the GOP primary in March 2004.

Ashburn was first elected to office in 1984, when he won a seat on the Kern County Board of Supervisors. He served there for 12 years, then was elected to the state assembly, where he spent six years.
