Biography:
Tammy Baldwin was raised in Madison, Wis., where she still resides. She graduated first in her class at Madison West High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and political science from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., in 1984.
She was elected to the Dane County (Wis.) Board in 1986 and served four years. Baldwin received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989.
She was elected to the Assembly in 1992 as the youngest woman in the Wisconsin Legislature. She was elected to the U.S. House in 1998.
Baldwin, who is single, is the only openly gay woman in Congress.
