Biography:

Don Barbieri was born on Nov. 18, 1945, in Spokane, Wash. The grandson of European immigrants grew up in Spokane as the son of Lou and Katherine Barbieri.

Barbieri received a bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University and did graduate studies in urban planning at the University of Washington. In 1969, Barbieri returned to Spokane to join his father's company, later serving as its president and chief executive officer.

The company became WestCoast Hospitality Corp., a hotel management company that bought the Red Lion hotel chain from the Hilton Corp., creating a group of more than 80 hotels in 14 states.

Barbieri resigned as CEO and president in 2003, but remains as chairman of the board. Barbieri has been active in the community, serving as past president of the Spokane Area Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way campaigns and chairman of the board of Sacred Heart Medical Center and a trustee of Gonzaga University.

In 2002, Gov. Gary Locke appointed Barbieri to a three-year term on the state's Economic Development Commission. Barbieri, who is recently divorced from his wife Heather, has two sons, David and Steven.
