Biography:

Republican Gresham Barrett grew up in Westminster, S.C. After graduation from the town's high school, he went to The Citadel, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. He became a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduation and completion of Airborne school and was an artillery officer.

He resigned his commission as a captain in 1987 to run the family's furniture business. Barrett served three terms in the South Carolina House, beginning in 1997 and was elected to the U.S. House in 2002.

Past Campaigns:

Republican Gresham Barrett won three elections to the South Carolina House, 1996, 1998 and 2000.

In 2002, he replaced Rep. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who gave up the seat to successfully run for the Senate seat the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond retired from in 2003.

Barrett won the GOP runoff in June 2002, fending off another representative, a state senator and three other candidates in the six-way race. Barrett won a runoff contest against state Rep. Jim Klauber, R-Greenwood, with 65 percent of the vote. Barrett defeated Democrat George Brightharp in the general election with 67 percent of the vote.
