Biography:

Xavier Becerra was born in Sacramento, Calif., and resides in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles. He received both his bachelor's degree in economics and law degree from Stanford University.

He began his legal career in 1984 working in a legal services office representing the mentally ill. He later became deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1990 and, two years later, elected to the U.S. House.

He is married to Carolina Reyes, a physician. They have three daughters.


Past Campaigns:

Xavier Becerra was elected to the state Assembly in 1990.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 59 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Morry Waksberg. He was re-elected in 1994 with 66 percent of the vote, defeating Republican David Ramirez.

In 1996, he was re-elected with 73 percent of the vote against Republican Patricia Parker. Becerra defeated Parker again in 1998, winning with 82 percent of the vote.Becerra won in 2000 against token GOP opposition with 83 percent of the vote. In 2001, he tried unsuccessfully to become Los Angeles' first Hispanic mayor.

He was re-elected to Congress in 2002.
