Shelley Berkley was elected in 1982 to the state Assembly and lost in a 1984 bid for state Senate. She was appointed as a university regent in 1990 and was then elected to a two-year term. She ran in 1992 and won a full six-year term. In her 1998 race for Congress, she defeated Republican Don Chairez 79,315 to 73,540.
In her 2000 race, Berkley defeated Republican Jon Porter by a wider, 52-44 percent margin.
She was re-elected in 2002 with 54 percent of the vote.
