Biography:

Earl Blumenauer was born and lives in Portland, Ore. Blumenauer received a bachelor's degree in 1970 from Lewis & Clark College and his law degree from the Lewis & Clark Law School in 1976.

Blumenauer began his political career by serving in the Oregon House from 1972 to 1978. He served as Multnomah County commissioner from 1978 to 1986 and was on the Portland City Council from 1986 to 1996. Blumenauer won a 1996 special election for the U.S. House seat vacated by Democratic Rep. Ron Wyden, who went on to the U.S. Senate to replace the resigning Bob Packwood.

Blumenauer went on to win the 1996 general election for the same House seat.

Blumenauer, who married for the third time in 2004, has two grown children.


Past Campaigns:

Earl Blumenauer was elected to the U.S. House in 1996 to replace former Rep. Ron Wyden, who moved up to the Senate. Blumenauer won a full term in November 1996 and was re-elected in 1998, 2000 and 2002. He won 67 percent of the vote in his heavily Democratic district in 2000 and again in 2002.

In 1972, at the age of 23, Blumenauer was elected to the Oregon Legislature, serving in the state House of Representatives until 1977. He served on the Multnomah County Commission from 1978 to 1986 and on the Portland City Council from 1986 to 1996. He lost a 1992 bid for mayor of Portland.
