Biography:

Sherwood Boehlert was born in Utica, N.Y., and lives in New Hartford, N.Y. He received a bachelor's degree from Utica College in 1961.

He served in the Army from 1956 to 1958. He was chief of staff for Rep. Alexander Pirnie from 1964 to 1972, and then for Pirnie's successor, Donald Mitchell, from 1973 to 1979.

Boehlert was elected Oneida County executive in 1979 and succeeded Mitchell in the House, winning election in 1982.

Boehlert and his wife, Marianne, have four children.


Past Campaigns:

Sherwood Boehlert was elected to the U.S. House in 1982, succeeding his former boss, GOP Rep. Donald Mitchell. In 2000 Boehlert was surprised by a strong GOP primary challenge from David Vickers, who took 44 percent of the vote to Boehlert's 56 percent.

In 2002, he survived an even closer scare from Republican David Walrath. Boelhert pulled in 52 percent of the vote and Walrath 48 percent. He won the general election with 71 percent of the vote.
