Sherwood Boehlert was elected to the U.S. House in 1982, succeeding his former boss, GOP Rep. Donald Mitchell. In 2000 Boehlert was surprised by a strong GOP primary challenge from David Vickers, who took 44 percent of the vote to Boehlert's 56 percent.
In 2002, he survived an even closer scare from Republican David Walrath. Boelhert pulled in 52 percent of the vote and Walrath 48 percent. He won the general election with 71 percent of the vote.
