After a short stint as press secretary, Bonner became Callahan's chief of staff in 1989 and held the post until jumping into the race to succeed his boss following Callahan's retirement announcement.

Bonner had moved back to Mobile, Ala., in the 1st District in 1997, giving him the groundwork to compete in the 2002 Republican primary featuring seven candidates, including Tom Young, former chief of staff to Republican Sen. Richard Shelby. Bonner won the nomination in a runoff contest three weeks later. He defeated Democrat Judy Belk in the general election.

Bonner and his wife, Janee, still reside in Mobile with their three children.
