Biography:

A Tullahoma, Tenn., city alderman and former congressional staffer, Janice Bowling is renewing her quest for the U.S. House seat she ran for unsuccessfully in 2002 against Democratic Rep. Lincoln Davis.

Born in Selma, Ala., Bowling holds a degree in education from Auburn university. She and her husband of 35 years, Temple, moved to Tullahoma in 1972 when he was stationed at Arnold Engineering Development Center.

Bowling worked as an elementary school special education teacher before moving on to serve for six years as district director for then-4th District U.S. Rep. Van Hilleary.

When Hilleary became the GOP nominee for governor, Bowling unsuccessfully ran for the 4th District congressional seat in 2002. She was defeated by the incumbent, Rep. Lincoln Davis.

As a city alderman for 10 years, Bowling failed in a 1999 attempt to be mayor of Tullahoma, a city of about 18,000 residents.

The Bowlings have three children, Temple, Elizabeth and Jonathan.

Past Campaigns:

The race between Rep. Lincoln Davis and Janice Bowling may be the only seriously contested congressional district in Tennessee in 2004.

Bowling lost in 2002 with 47 percent of the vote, and some Republicans hope she can improve on that total this year.

But Davis leads Bowling when it comes to fund raising. Through July 16, the most recent reporting period, Bowling had collected just over $153,000 in contributions, compared to almost $800,000 for Davis.

Bowling also ran an unsuccessful race 1999 for mayor of Tullahoma.
