Dan Burton was elected to the U.S. House in 1982 with 65 percent of the vote. He defeated Democrat James Fadely in 1990, with 63 percent of the vote and Democrat Natalie Bruner in 1992 with 73 percent of the vote. He defeated Bruner again in 1994 with 77 percent. He was re-elected in 1996 with 75 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Carrie Dillard-Tramell. In 1998, Burton defeated Democrat Bob Kern with 72 percent of the vote. In 2000, Burton was re-elected with 70 percent of the vote.
He easily won the May 2002 GOP primary in a newly drawn 5th District, still considered a GOP stronghold. He went on to win the general election by getting 71 percent of the vote.
Burton lost two bids for the House in 1970 and 1972. Burton also served in the Indiana Legislature, first winning election to the Indiana House in 1966 and to the Indiana Senate in 1968.
