Julia Carson was elected to the U.S. House in 1996 with 53 percent of the vote against Republican Virginia Blankenbaker. She was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Gary Hofmeister with 58 percent of the vote. She was re-elected in 2000 with 59 percent of the vote.
She defeated Republican Brose McVey, a former aide to Dan Quayle and Dan Coats when they were U.S. senators, in the 2002 general election in a newly drawn 7th District.
Like the former 10th, it still comprises most of Indianapolis.
Carson served in the Indiana Senate, 1976-90; and the Indiana House, 1972-76.
