James Clyburn ran unsuccessfully for South Carolina secretary of state in 1978 and again in 1986. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 65 percent of the vote, defeating Republican John Chase. He was re-elected in 1994 with 64 percent, defeating Republican Gary McLeod.
In 1996, he was re-elected with 68 percent of the vote, defeating McLeod again. Clyburn was re-elected in 1998, defeating McLeod with 73 percent of the vote.
He was re-elected in 2000 with 72 percent to black Republican Vince Ellison's 26 percent. In 2002, Clyburn beat McLead again, this time by a 67 percent-32 percent margin. In the 2002 contest, Clyburn won 67 percent of the vote to McLeod's 32 percent.
Clyburn again faced McLeod in 2004.
