John Conyers was elected to the U.S. House in 1964, winning in a newly created district with 84 percent of the vote after a tight primary battle against Democrat Richard Austin. He was re-elected to 14 consecutive terms, defeating Republican Ray Shoulders in 1990 with 91 percent of the vote and Republican John Gordon in 1992 with 84 percent of the vote. He defeated Republican Richard Fournier with 82 percent of the vote in 1994.
In 1996, Conyers was re-elected with 84 percent of the vote, defeating Republican William Ashe. In 1998, Conyers defeated Republican Vendella Collins with 87 percent of the vote.
In 2000, Conyers defeated William Ashe with 90 percent of the vote.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 83 percent of the vote.
