Before coming to Congress, Bud Cramer served two terms as Madison County district attorney.
Cramer was elected to the U.S. House in 1990 with 67 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Albert McDonald. He was re-elected in 1992 with 66 percent of the vote defeating Republican Terry Smith.
In 1994, Cramer was re-elected with 51 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Wayne Parker.
In 1996, Cramer defeated Republican Wayne Parker with 56 percent of the vote. He was elected to a fifth term in the House in 1998, defeating Republican Gil Aust with 70 percent of the vote.
He was one of four Alabama incumbents re-elected without major party opposition in 2000. Cramer won with 89 percent of the vote that year.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 73 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Stephen Engel.
In 2004, Cramer easily survived a primary challenge from Michael Williams.
