Biography:
Peter DeFazio was born in Needham, Mass., and lives in Springfield, Ore. He received a bachelor's degree in 1969 from Tufts University and a master's degree in 1977 from the University of Oregon.
He served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1971. He worked for U.S. Rep. James H. Weaver, D-Ore., from 1977 to 1982. He was elected a Lane County commissioner, serving from 1983 to 1987.
DeFazio was first elected to the U.S. House in 1986, and is currently the senior member of the state's five-person House delegation. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 1995 to replace the resigning Bob Packwood, but lost the Democratic nomination to then-Rep. Ron Wyden.
DeFazio and his wife, Myrnie, have no children.

Peter DeFazio was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 and has easily won re-election every two years since then. He won 68 percent of the vote in 2000 and 64 percent in 2002.
DeFazio was elected a Lane County commissioner in 1982.
