Biography:

Tom Delay was born in Laredo, Texas, and lives in Sugar Land, Texas. He graduated from Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1965. He attended Baylor University, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston in 1970.

He worked for Redwood Chemical, a manufacturer of pesticides, before starting his own exterminating business, Albo Pest Control.

He was first elected to the Texas House in 1978, serving 1979-85. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1984. In 2002, he took over Majority Leader Dick Armey's post, when his fellow Texas Republican retired.

DeLay and his wife, Christine, have one daughter, Danielle, a graduate of Texas A&M University. They have raised three foster children.


Past Campaigns:

Tom DeLay was elected to the U.S. House in 1984, with 65 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Doug Williams.

He has won re-elected by wide margins ever since. He defeated Democrat Bruce Director in 1990 with 71 percent of the vote. He won re-election in 1992 with 68 percent of the of the vote. DeLay was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat Hill Kemp with 65 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 2000 with 60 percent of the vote. In 2002 he was re-elected with 63 percent of the vote.

He faced token Democratic opposition in 2004, in a redrawn district that now includes NASA's Johnson Space Center.

DeLay served in the Texas Legislature from 1979 to 1985.
