Biography:
Born on Oct. 24, 1934, Nicholas George Demas grew up in Cincinnati as the eldest of four brothers. After graduation from West Liberty State University in West Virginia, Demas worked as a draftsman for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company. That's where he says he discovered what would become his career _ engineering.
Demas earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, while at the same time working at Bettis Nuclear Power Laboratories, which is operated by Westinghouse Electric Corp.
He would go on to receive his doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin before returning to Westinghouse, where he worked on nuclear reactor designs, according to biographical material on his campaign Web site.
He and his wife, Barbara, moved to Tennessee when Demas joined Tennessee Tech's faculty in 1977. The couple, together for 43 years, have three children.
Since retiring from teaching in 1995, Demas enjoys hunting, fishing and singing in his church choir. He's also a member of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra Society and the Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Singing in America.
