Biography:

Joe Donnelly grew up on Long Island, N.Y., in the town of Massapequa. He moved to South Bend in 1973 as an undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame. He earned a bachelor's degree in government in 1977 and earned a law degree in 1981.

He decided to remain in the South Bend area, saying: "I loved it here, I met my wife out here and I wanted to be part of this community."

He worked as a lawyer and managed a small business. In 1997 he started his own business in Mishawaka, Marking Solutions Inc., a company that sells printing-related materials. He is "of counsel" to the law firm of Nemeth, Masters & Feeny, which means he can still practice law but "I don't have any time to represent any clients."

He lives in Granger with his wife, Jill, and has two children.

He served on the Indiana State Election Board, 1988-89, and spent five years on the school board for Marian High School, a Roman Catholic school in Mishawaka, serving one year as president.

Past Campaigns:

Joe Donnelly ran an unsuccesful campaign for the Democratic nomination for Indiana attorney general in 1988. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for state Senate in 1990. He ran unopposed in the 2004 Democratic primary for the right to challange incumbent U.S. Rep. Chris Chocola.
