Biography:

Chet Edwards received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1974 from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard in 1981. He was an aide to then-U.S. Rep. Olin Teague in 1974. Edwards worked as a marketing representative for the Trammell Crow Co. He was elected to the state Senate in 1982 and was re-elected in 1986.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1990.


Past Campaigns:

Chet Edwards was elected to the U.S. House in 1990 with 54 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Hugh Shine. He was re-elected in 1992 with 67 percent of the vote, defeating Republican James Broyles.

He defeated Broyles again in 1994 with 59 percent of the vote. In 1996, he was re-elected with 57 percent of the vote against Republican Jay Mathis. Edwards was re-elected in 1998 without major party opposition.

He was re-elected in 2000 with 55 percent of the vote. In 2002, he won re-election with 52 percent of the vote.

Edwards was elected to the state Senate in 1982 and was re-elected in 1986. He lost a bid for the U.S. House nomination in 1978.
