Eliot Engel served in the New York Assembly from 1977 to 1988. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1988 and was re-elected in 1990 with 61 percent of the vote, defeating Republican William Gouldman.
He won re-election again in 1992 with 81 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Martin Richman. In 1994 he received 74 percent of the vote against Republican Edward Marshall. In 1996, he received 85 percent of the vote against Republican Denis McCarthy, and in 1998 he garnered 88 percent of the vote versus Republican Peter Fiumefreddo.
He faced his strongest challenge in the 2000 Democratic Primary, pulling in 49 percent of the votes against state Sen. Larry Seabrook, who drew 42 percent of the votes. After that scare he rolled over Patrick McManus in the general election with 89 percent of the vote.
In 2002 he was re-elected with 62 percent of the vote in a redrawn district.
