Forbes received his bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1974 and a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1977.

He is a former state GOP chairman and was elected to U.S. Congress in a special election in 2001.

Past Campaigns:

Randy Forbes defeated Democratic state Sen. Louise Lucas in a special election for the Congressional seat left open when Rep. Norman Sisisky, a conservative Democrat, died in March 2001.

Forbes faced a rematch until Lucas, in a move that stunned Democrats, announced on Aug. 23, 2001, that she was abandoning her campaign.

Forbes was re-elected in 2002.

Forbes was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1990 to 1998 and served in the state Senate from 1998 to 2000. He was the state Republican Party chairman from 1996 to 2000.

Under Forbes, the state GOP organization emerged from debts and built a surplus. This came during a time when the party, with George Allen's successful challenge to Democratic U.S. Sen. Chuck Robb, took control of every statewide elected office and gained control of both chambers of the General Assembly.
