Biography:

Rodney Frelinghuysen was born in New York City and resides in Harding, N.J. He graduated from Hobart College with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and pursued graduate studies at Trinity College in Connecticut.

He served in the 93rd Engineer Battalion in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. In 1972, then-Morris County Freeholder Director Dean A. Gallo hired Frelinghuysen to be the county's state and federal aid coordinator and administrative assistant.

Frelinghuysen later served as a Morris County Freeholder and in 1983 was elected to the state Assembly, where he served until he ran for Congress in 1994.

Gallo, a five-term congressional incumbent, decided not to run for re-election in 1994 due to poor health. Frelinghuysen was elected to the U.S. House in 1994.

He and his wife, Virginia, have two daughters.


Past Campaigns:

Rodney Frelinghuysen began his first term as a Morris County, N.J., freeholder in 1975. He was re-elected in 1977 and 1980. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1983 and re-elected four times.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1994, defeated Democrat Frank Herbert with 71 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 1996 with 66 percent of the vote against Democrat Chris Evangel. In 1998, Frelinghuysen was re-elected, defeating Democrat John Scollo with 68 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 68 percent of the vote.

In 2002, he was re-elected with 72 percent of the vote.
