Biography:

Elton Gallegly was born in the Los Angeles suburb of Huntington Park. He graduated from Huntington Park High School in 1962 and attended California State University at Los Angeles but did not receive a degree.

After leaving college, he became a real estate broker and settled in Simi Valley, Calif. In 1979, he was elected to the city council of Simi Valley. He was elected mayor in 1980 by the council and was re-elected in 1981. In 1982, the city changed its system of selecting the mayor, and he was elected by voters. He was re-elected mayor in 1984 and held that post until 1986 when he ran for Congress.

Gallegly and his wife, Janice, have four children and seven grandchildren.


Past Campaigns:

Elton Gallegly was elected to the U.S. House in 1986, with 68 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Gilbert R. Saldana, for the seat vacated by Rep. Bobbi Fiedler. He has won re-election by comfortable margins ever since.

Gallegly defeated Democrat Richard Freiman in 1990 with 58 percent of the vote and Democrat Anita Perez Ferguson in 1992 with 54 percent of the vote. He defeated Democrat Kevin Ready in 1994 with 66 percent of the vote.

In 1996, he was re-elected with 59 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Robert Unruhe. Gallegly won a seventh term in 1998 defeating Democrat Daniel Gonzalez with 60 percent of the vote. Gallegy defeated Democrat Michael Case in 2000 with 53 percent of the vote.

He defeated Fern Rudin in 2002, winning 65 percent of the vote.
