Biography:

Robert W. Goodlatte was born in Holyoke, Mass., and lives in Roanoke, Va. He received a bachelor's degree in government from Bates College in 1974 and a law degree from Washington and Lee University in 1977. He served as district office manager for then-Rep. M. Caldwell Butler from 1977 to 1979, when he started practicing law in Roanoke. He has worked on numerous Republican campaigns in Virginia.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 and faced no opposition for a second term. He has easily won re-election ever since. Goodlatte and his wife, Maryellen, have two children.

Past Campaigns:

Bob Goodlatte was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 60 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Stephen Musselwhite. He was unopposed in 1994.

In 1996, he was re-elected with 67 percent of the vote against Democrat Jeffrey Grey. Goodlatte was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat David Bowers with 69 percent of the vote.

He had no Democratic opposition in 2000 and 2002.
