Biography:

Sam Graves operates a sixth-generation farm, in cooperation with his father and brother, just outside Tarkio in Atchison County. The Graveses raise corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. In 1991, the Farm Bureau named him the Outstanding Young Farmer in the United States and he received a similar honor in 1996 from the Missouri Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Graves served in the Missouri State House and Senate before going to Washington in 2000.

His brother, Todd, then Platte County prosecutor, lost the state treasurer's race that year to Democrat Nancy Farmer but won appointment from President Bush to be U.S. attorney and was confirmed in 2001.

Sam Graves and his wife, Lesley, have three children: Megan, Emily and Sam III. Lesley Graves teaches kindergarten.

Graves' voting record received an 83 percent rating in 2003 from the American Conservative Union. His 2003 record received a 5 percent rating from the liberal Americans for Democratic Action.


Past Campaigns:

Sam Graves won election to the Missouri House in 1992, defeating longtime Democratic incumbent Everett Brown, who had been affected by redistricting.

He was elected to an open Missouri Senate in 1994 and served until 2001. Graves won Missouri's 6th Congressional District in the 2000 election with 51 percent of the vote over Democratic former state Sen. Steve Danner, the son of the retiring incumbent.

He was re-elected in 2002 with 63 percent of the vote.
