Biography:
A reformed hippie. A wannabe actor. A writer. An unemployed real estate agent. And, most importantly, an avid supporter of eugenics.
That's how James Hart sees himself _ as a man wandering, constantly in search of new ideas, of inventive ways to improve the world.
Hart believes the ultimate solution to the world's problems lies in eugenics, a pseudoscientific movement that arose in the early 20th century to solve social problems by preventing the "unfit" from having children.
It inspired 33 states to pass laws that allowed the sterilization of some 65,000 people, and Nazi Germany used the U.S. examples to justify programs that sterilized and killed millions.
Originally from Michigan, Hart attended Michigan State, where he studied English literature before moving in the 1960s to Haight-Ashbury, a San Francisco neighborhood famous for its hippie population.
He eventually moved back to Michigan, but returned to the West Coast a decade later with dreams of acting.
"I lived in a car for one and a half years," he said of his time in Los Angeles, where he claims to have been an extra in several movies, including "King Kong." "During that time I started wondering about affirmative action and busing."
The early death of his only son, Wayne, prompted his interest in politics, Hart says.
Wayne, then 29, shot himself in the head Jan. 20, 2001, in Hart's home, where he'd been living with his father.
"I'm running because my son committed suicide," he said. "I feel like we're in a culture war. In the 50s and 60s we didn't have Columbines, we didn't have drugs. ... We brought in these ideas about drugs and the traditional family unit not being a critical aspect of society. We brought these on ourselves and our children."
Hart believes eugenics policies would return the country to a nation of "productive and creative people" who founded it.
"I'm trying to fix what's wrong in my life so what happened to my son doesn't happen to yours," he says.
